چکیده

This article describes some fundamentals for an environment-responsive traffic control. It starts with a brief description of the needs to consider environmental aspects in urban traffic control, focusing on noise, particular matters (PM), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Respective current regulations by law in Europe and Germany are explained. Comparing the regulations for the improvement of air quality and for noise reduction, important similarities and differences are pointed out. In the next section, the idea of a dynamic traffic control is introduced, which takes into account not only the traffic situation, but also the current environmental situation. Systematically, the different options of dynamic measures to influence traffic volumes and traffic flow are being analyzed and assessed for their general potential to improve the environmental situation while avoiding unnecessary restrictions for motorized traffic. An overview on measures is given which have been applied so far to improve the environmental situation, concentrating on traffic control measures. E.g. this includes approaches to optimize traffic signal control, restrictions for heavy vehicles to pass certain parts of the network, “environmental zones” (Umweltzonen), and speed limits. Furthermore, different methods to assess the potential of traffic control measures as a basis for a situation-dependent selection of measures are described, especially regarding the quality of their results (accuracy, time resolution, and spatial transferability). Concluding, research and development needs are outlined. mobil.TUM 2009 International Scientific Conference on Mobility and Transport ITS for larger Cities. 12&13 May 2009, Munich

A Stochastic Optimal Control Approach to Real-time, Incident-Responsive Traffic Signal Control at Isolated Intersections

Real-time incident-responsive traffic control and management is vital to development of advanced incident management systems in ITS. More importantly, it provides, from an academic point of view, the linkages between incident detection, incident management, and traffic signal control. This study explores the application of a stochastic optimal control approach to real-time incident-responsive t...

Active Queue Management for Fair Bandwidth Allocation of Mixed Responsive and Non-Responsive Traffic Using a Closed-Loop Congestion Control Scheme

Today’s known and widely used active queue management (AQM) schemes do not differentiate between packets from responsive (e.g., TCP sessions) and non-responsive traffic (e.g., UDP). This results in further widening the gap of unfair advantage already inherent to non-responsive traffic, as the responsive sender will significantly reduce its future transmit rate as a result of the congestion sign...

A multivariable regulator approach to traffic - responsive network - wide signal control $

The paper presents the design approach, the objectives, the development, the advantages, and some application results of the traffic-responsive urban control (TUC) strategy. Based on a store-and-forward modelling of the urban network traffic and using the linear-quadratic regulator theory, the design of TUC leads to a multivariable regulator for traffic-responsive co-ordinated networkwide signa...

A Brief Survey on Advances of Control and Intelligent Systems Methods for Traffic-responsive Control of Urban Networks

Subject review Traffic congestions in urban networks could contribute to adverse impact on the economy, environment and the quality of life. As a result, much research has been conducted to provide counter measures through traffic-responsive control strategies. These strategies aim to provide automated regulations of traffics through various control and intelligent systems methodologies. This p...
